How to Check Your Google Keyword Ranking for Free

SEO tools and guides6 min read

You just published a blog post. You're proud of it. Naturally, you open Google and search your target keyword.

Page one? Nope. Page two? Not there either. Page three… nothing.

Panic sets in.

But here's the thing. That search you just did? It probably lied to you.

Google personalizes results based on your location, search history, and even your device. What you see is not what your potential customer sees. Not even close.

So how do you actually check where your pages rank? Let's walk through every free method available, what each one gets right, and where each one falls short.

The incognito search trick (and why it barely works)

This is the first thing most people try. Open an incognito window, type your keyword, and count the results.

It feels clever. You're bypassing cookies and search history. That should give you a clean result, right?

Not quite.

Google still personalizes results based on your IP address, which reveals your general location. A user in Kuala Lumpur and a user in Johor Bahru can see completely different rankings for the same keyword, even in incognito mode. As Google's own documentation on how search algorithms work explains, factors like location and language play a major role in what results appear.

Incognito mode strips away some personalization. But it doesn't strip away all of it. You're still getting a tinted view.

There's another problem too. You're checking one keyword at a time, manually scrolling through results. If you track 50 keywords, that's 50 separate searches. Every single day. Nobody has time for that.

When it's useful: Quick, one-off spot checks. That's it.

When it fails: Anything that needs accuracy, consistency, or scale.

Google Search Console: free data straight from the source

If you have a website and haven't set up Google Search Console, stop reading this and go do it now. Seriously. It's free, it's from Google, and it gives you ranking data that no incognito window ever could.

Inside the Performance report, you'll find a metric called Average Position. This tells you the average ranking of your page for a specific query over a period of time.

Here's how to find it:

  • Log into Google Search Console
  • Click Performance in the left sidebar
  • Check the Average Position box above the chart
  • Scroll down to the Queries tab

You'll see a list of keywords your site appeared for, along with clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. It's a goldmine.

But "average" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that metric.

StrengthLimitation
Real data from Google itselfPosition is an average, not a live snapshot
Covers all keywords you rank forData is delayed by 2-3 days
Completely freeDoesn't show competitor rankings
Tracks trends over timeCan't check keywords you don't rank for yet

If your average position for a keyword is 8.4, that doesn't mean you're sitting at position 8 right now. You might have bounced between position 3 and position 15 throughout the week. The average smooths everything out, which hides the volatility.

Search Console is excellent for understanding trends. It's less useful for knowing exactly where you rank at this moment.

Free rank checker tools online

A quick Google search for "keyword rank checker" will surface dozens of free tools. Some are browser-based. Some require a download. Most give you a snapshot of your current position for a specific keyword.

Popular free options include tools like Ahrefs' free SERP checker, SEMrush's free position tracking (limited queries), and various standalone rank checkers.

These tools work by simulating a Google search from a specific location and reading the results. They remove most personalization, which makes them more reliable than your incognito window.

But free tiers come with tight limits:

  • Query caps: Most free tools let you check 5-10 keywords per day
  • Location limits: Some don't let you specify a country or city
  • No historical tracking: You get today's position but can't see last week's
  • No alerts: If your ranking drops, nobody tells you

For a Malaysian business trying to track rankings in specific states or cities, these limitations hit hard. General tools often default to US-based results or broad country-level data. If your customers are in Penang, you need Penang-level data.

Why manual checking creates a false sense of security

Let's be honest about what's really happening when you rely on manual methods.

You check your rankings on Monday. Everything looks fine. You move on with your week. Meanwhile, a competitor publishes a better page on Tuesday, and by Wednesday your position drops from 5 to 12. You don't notice until the following Monday, if you even remember to check.

A week of lost traffic. A week of lost leads. All because you were flying blind.

Manual keyword rank checking has three fatal flaws:

  • Inconsistency. You'll forget. Life gets busy. Tracking becomes sporadic.
  • Inaccuracy. Personalization, location bias, and timing all skew your results.
  • No context. A number without a trend line tells you almost nothing. Is position 6 good? It depends. Were you at position 3 last month?

Rankings are not a photograph. They're a movie. And you need to watch the whole film to understand the plot.

A dedicated rank tracker fixes all of this

Every method above works to some degree. But each one asks you to trade either accuracy, consistency, or time. Usually all three.

A dedicated google keyword rank checker automates the entire process. It checks your rankings daily, from the right location, and stores historical data so you can spot trends before they become problems.

This is exactly what SapuSEO's rank tracking tool was built for. It tracks keyword positions specifically for the Malaysian market, so you're not getting US-centric data that means nothing to your business. You see where you actually rank, in the locations that actually matter to your customers.

Here's what changes when you switch from manual checking to a proper tool:

Manual MethodDedicated Rank Tracker
Check when you rememberAutomatic daily checks
One keyword at a timeAll keywords tracked at once
No historyFull ranking history and trends
Location guessworkPrecise location-based tracking
You spot problems lateYou catch drops immediately

You wouldn't run a business without checking your bank account. Don't run a website without checking your rankings properly.

If you've been relying on incognito windows and gut feeling, try something better. SapuSEO offers a 7-day trial for just RM2 so you can see your actual rankings, tracked daily, with real Malaysian search data. It takes two minutes to set up and saves you hours of manual guesswork every week.

Your rankings are either going up or going down. The only question is whether you'll know about it in time to do something.
